A place at the Table

Let me establish a little credibility. I’m a wife, a mom to three daughters and a grandma to one granddaughter. We are a “girl house” through and through (my husband is a saint). For 20+ years our house has been filled with lost Barbie shoes, powdery glitter, big emotions and slime that smells like cupcakes. I have never had a son. I can only speak from my personal journey and experiences. But I’m sure any of this will apply to any parent who is trying to help raise good humans who aren’t jerks.

I take parenting very seriously. It’s such an incredibly important role and so rewarding. But, man, it’s freaking hard! There are so many things that we try to teach our kids. How to ride bikes, study hard, not sneeze in people’s faces, say you’re sorry when you mess up, use your manners. Those are all important things. But the behaviors that will carry them their entire lives….many of those are caught, not taught. One of those behaviors that I, personally, am trying to model for my girls is confidence. CONFIDENCE. That’s a tough one. How to be confident when you simply walk into a room. Confidence in your abilities. Confidence in your knowledge. Confidence in your values and beliefs. Those things are hard to “teach”. But what you CAN do is show them. Show them how to stand up for themselves, how to have courage, how to stand up for others who can’t, and how to give themselves grace when they fall short. And that their voice not only matters, but that it can change the way that people think. Show them. They’re watching you.

Show them how to be confident and that they are worthy and valuable enough to sit at ANY table. And if those at the table refuse to let them sit. Arm them with the knowledge and confidence to build their own. And make sure there are plenty of seats.
